Reality
Based Self Defence
Combatives is a
general term used to describe Military (Hand-To-Hand) Close Quarter
Combat that has evolved since its use during WWII. As
part of the Combatives Syllabus students
are taught that Self-Protection skills include Awareness
& Avoidance, Escape, Passive Stances, Verbal
De-escalation and Dissuasion
skills
Posturing,
Pre-emptive Strikes, Striking Techniques/Concepts and finally the
Combative Mindset. However, should a student find
him/herself in a confrontation, with no means of escape, techniques
and concepts that are taught within
the Combative syllabus, along with the all important Combative mindset, can be
employed to disable an
attacker to allow for a safe
escape.

Included
within the Combative syllabus
is scenario/situation drills, role play and Pressure
Tests using our Defend You™
Program, which is
a fundamental part of the
Syllabus. As part the
Defend You™
Program
a
number of 'Tuff Guy'
™ padded assailants are used to enable
the students to
use of full contact
techniques
against
one or more aggressors. Therefore,
students are under no illusions as to what
does, and what does not, work on the street.

KyukTooKi
KyukTooKi
(Korean Kickboxing) is a total fighting system that
combines traditional and modified Taekwondo kicks, with the low leg
kicks commonly used in Muay Thai. KyukTooKi also uses the four
boxing punches such as the jab, cross, hook and uppercut along with
other hand techniques associated with Taekwondo, such as the ridge hand
and spinning back fist. Muay Thai elbow and knee strikes are also
used, as is the Muay Thai Clinch. And lastly, to complete the
repertoire, KyukTooKi has throws, take-downs, sweeps, locks and chokes
associated with Judo.
As part of the KyukTooKi Grading Syllabus, students
perform striking techniques on Focus Mitts and Pads and are also expected to participate in 'Point-Stop'
Kickboxing sparring, 'Light-Continuous'
Kickboxing sparring and KyukTooKi sparring, which enables the student to put into
practice the many skills taught, on a moving target, i.e., their opponent. All
sparring is conducted under the guidance and control of instructors, with
all participants wearing mandatory safety equipment. Sparring rules
can been seen
here.

I want to join, but I am a bit nervous about joining?
The
hardest part will always be walking through the door and we empathise with
that, once you are in, you will be fine.
We suggest, as we do to everyone, that you come along and watch us
train for as many times as you like. It
is vitally important to make sure that we are the right club
(Academy) for you. Once
you have decided that you wish to train with us, as many do, you will have
a trial lesson completely free. We
do not make any concessions for beginners, such as beginner’s classes,
for two reasons. Firstly, you
will receive a warm welcome from all Instructors and Students, guaranteed.
This is not special treatment, far from it, this is the way that we
are and it is the way that we work, we are all friends and there are no
egos. Secondly, we do not want
to give you any false impressions, what-you-see-is-what-you-get, we are
warm, friendly and encouraging.
FAQ menu
I am not fit or flexible, can I still join?
Of
course you can! KyukTooKi is all about progression and you will improve as your training
progresses.
FAQ menu
How old do you have to be to start?
To
train at the Academy you have to be ten years and over, though there are
exceptions.
FAQ menu
How old is ‘too old’?
You
can never be ‘too old’ as long are you are willing to learn and work
hard.
FAQ menu
What do you wear?
For
most of our training we wear a black/yellow silk/satin
Kickboxing uniform, but we regularly train in our ‘street clothes',
which is part of our Reality Based Self Defence training. The
cost of the uniform can be seen on our
Costs section of our website.
The
wearing of shoes is encouraged, or to be more accurate, the wearing of
Martial Arts (Taekwondo) shoes or suitable training shoes is encouraged
when training.
FAQ menu
Do you teach any self-defence?
Yes, 50% of
our training is Combatives.
As part of the Combative Syllabus you will learn Conflict
Management,
Adrenaline Management,
awareness and avoidance skills, verbal dissuasion and
de-escalation skills, escapes, passive stances, posturing, pre-emptive
strikes, striking techniques/concepts and how to employ the correct mindset.
You will also have the opportunity to test your skills during our
very popular monthly Pressure Tests, where we run our Defend You™
Program.
FAQ menu
If 50% of your syllabus is self-defence, what is the other 50% made up of?
The other 50%
of the syllabus is sport orientated, that being KyukTooKi - Korean
Kickboxing.
FAQ menu
Do I have to
participate in KyukTooKi Sparring?
To start off
with, no, but as you go up the grades you will be expected to
participate in the sparring to pass
your Gradings and get on to the next progressive level.
FAQ menu
Grades and Gradings, what are they?
There are ten
Grades (levels) in the KyukTooKi syllabus to achieve, each Grade has a
designated coloured belt, which have to be achieved in order to be
eligible to take Grading for the coveted Black Belt in KyukTooKi.
Gradings are conducted every three months to give you, the student,
the opportunity to show off your skills that you have learnt. If
your skills meet the required standard, and the Grading is passed, you
will be awarded your new belt, showing your progression to the next Grade (level).
You are not obliged to grade if you do not wish to do so, but
KyukTooKi is geared towards the progression of the students,
making Grades and Gradings necessary.
If you do wish to grade then the Chief Instructor will invite you
to Grade near the time of the Grading if he feels that you are ready.
FAQ menu
Are written exams part of
Gradings?
No,
there are no theory or written modules with our syllabus, they are all
practical.
FAQ menu
Do I have to learn any foreign languages?
No,
none, though some Instructors may use some (very few) Korean terms for
etiquette purposes and during training preparations for
tournaments where Korean is used for student familiarity purposes.
FAQ menu
Are
Patterns/Katas part of your KyukTooKi Syllabus?
No.
FAQ menu
When can I start sparring?
You
can start sparring, under supervision, as soon as you have the mandatory
safety equipment.
FAQ menu
What is the mandatory safety equipment?
Foot
protection, shin protection and hand protection are mandatory, but you are
strongly advised to wear additional safety equipment such as a groin-guard (males), chest-guard
(females), a gum shield and a head-guard.
FAQ menu
Do I have to compete?
No,
competitions are there only if you want to do them.
FAQ menu
How long would it take for me to reach Black Belt?
It
depends. Providing that you
regularly attend classes and that you reach the required standard for each
Grading, you have the potential to reach Black Belt (1st Dan) in just three
years, but you must earn it.
FAQ menu
What happens when I reach a Black Belt?
That
is when the fun begins! You
can still progress through the Dan (Degree) ranks of Black Belt, but there

4th Dan and so on.
You may also wish to become an Instructor and assist in the running
of a Club or Academy.
